Mitchell Coats is a trial lawyer, highly qualified to handle any complex civil litigation or criminal defense matters. Mitchell graduated from Temple University, Beasley School of Law in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Trial Advocacy in 2023. Mitchell’s advanced law degree focused on the practical, courtroom application of case theory and theme, persuasive storytelling, extemporaneous speech, and effective use of technology in the courtroom. Before attending Temple University, Mitchell earned his law degree from the University of Idaho and graduated cum laude with a B.S. in Agriculture Science from the University of Idaho.

Before joining Borton-Lakey, Mitchell served as the Chief Deputy Prosecutor of Boise County, prosecuting all the criminal matters for the county. As the prosecutor, he gathered a wealth of experiences trying cases and arguing hearings; it’s where his passion for being a trail lawyer truly began. Before prosecuting, Mitchell worked in civil litigation, where he developed novel arguments and case theories for high-profile constitutional matters concerning Covid-19 vaccine and mask mandates, internet censorship under the Communications Decency Act, and the First and Second Amendments.

In his spare time, Mitchell is a devoted father to his son, and they enjoy camping, fishing, all types of sports and working out together. Mitchell’s competitive spirit was honed long before becoming a trial lawyer. Mitchell blazed the trail for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Idaho. Mitchell was a highly decorated BJJ competitor, who fought in competitions in Brazil, Canada, and the U.S. He is recognized as being the first American to earn his black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from most decorated team in the World, Alliance – Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Mitchell also competed in several professional MMA fights and even coached top ranked fighters in the UFC.
